Expert artistry & design serving the New England Coast

I specialize in the artisan process of faux teak oil painting. Each design is created by hand - with a brush, not a machine - and uses custom mixed glazes layered on top of each other. This creates an exquisite and realistic depth - mimicking the chatoyance of actual wood. The painted wood is then lightly sanded for adherence and generously sprayed with durable two coat clear. Once this is sanded perfectly smooth, a custom designed Name and hailing port is applied using your choice of 24K gold, palladium, or caplain silver leaf. The whole thing is sprayed with a finish coat of clear for the ultimate protection. The technique is traditional and can only be accomplished with years of experience.

My Services

Design

I work with clients to design the name and hailing port on their boat's transom. Transom design includes a digital image (mockup) back-and-forth process working in conjunction with Tidal Graphics of Southwest Harbor, Maine. They can transform my thumbnail sketch or idea into a vectorized digital paper drawing which I then apply by hand to the boat.

Each design is approved by the client prior to execution. All I need is a photo of the transom taken from a straight-on, eye-level position, and some basic measurements to begin.

Gliding

Transom designs can be paint or precious metal leaf gilding. I've come to specialize in this over the years using 24K gold or Palladium Leaf. There are other alloys, but I don't recommend them for marine use. All gilding on boats should be encapsulated with a durable two-part clear coat. I work closely with the painters in each boatyard to achieve a superior end result.

Faux Teak and Woodgraining

Painted wood (faux bois) is an exciting new trend becoming very popular these days. I've been specializing in this for over a decade using all oil/alkyd based products. Just about anything can be transformed into brightwork on boats!

I love doing these upgrades for my clients. A typical transom transformation is considerably less expensive than applying a teak veneer. You’ll save on both the build, as well as yearly brightwork, because the clear coat only needs refreshing with a light, sprayed-on coat every two-three years.

Signage

Although boat work keeps me very busy, I sometimes offer design services for signage. However, due to my frequent traveling for boat work, it is best to book this service well in advance if you are seeking signage!

Specialized Services

I create unique and custom design projects through a variety of specialties, including (but not limited to):

Faux Bois, Gilding, Lettering, Carved-Effect Burnishing Techniques, Mural, or just about any other art form!

Hand-Lettering

I proudly provide expert, skillful hand-lettering, an art that is nearly lost in today’s modern world! I never use Vinyl. I can finely craft a piece of art using a gold leaf and brush for superyachts, daysailers, fishing boats, or rowboats.

Please note - at this time I do not do any form of vinyl work, including removal or application.

Thank you to my customers across the country!

Thank you to all my clients I’ve had the pleasure to meet along the way in Southwest harbor, Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Blue Hill, Stonington, Belfast, Camden, Thomaston, and Portland Maine! A special thank you for my out-of-state clients in Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Shelter lsland New York, Stuart Florida, and beyond!

I am willing to travel throughout the East Coast and New England for projects - just send me a message and let’s talk!
